How to Choose the Right Piano Teacher

It can sometimes be difficult to find the right piano teacher for your child. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for a teacher.

One important aspect to make sure of is that he/she feels comfortable around them. This definitely helps to create a connection to the instrument and to help them feel comfortable to express themselves without insecurities.

Another aspect to consider is what kind of music you want your child to learn, whether it be strictly classical, or a mix of jazz, pop/rock, and classical. Most teachers are able to teach many styles of music. It might be more beneficial for young beginners to have a teacher who can expose them to these different styles in order for them to develop their own musical tastes and preferences of what they want to play.

Distance can be a major factor in living in Toronto and can effect your decisions in what music school to attend. However, if you can handle a longer distance to a piano teacher that a student really loves learning from, it is worth making the trip. Sometimes convenience isn’t always the greatest reason for choosing a teacher and you should be aware of whether their style of teaching can benefit your child’s musical interests.
